About Agate:

Agate is a translucent microcrystalline quartzite. It is used as a semi-precious stone when it has the desired quality and color.

Agate is typically deposited from silica in groundwater found in cavities in igneous rocks. Agate is deposited in concentric layers around the cavity walls, or in horizontal layers that form from the bottom of the cavity. These structures produce many of the characteristic banding patterns of agate. Some of these cavities are lined with crystals, and these cavities are called geodes.

Agate comes in a variety of colors, including brown, white, red, grey, pink, black and yellow. The color is caused by impurities and appears as alternating bands within the agate. This banding gives many agates interesting colors and patterns, making them popular gemstones.
